Tumor surveillance via the ARF-p53 pathway
Article Abstract:
The ARF-p53 pathway is an important factor in tumor surveillance. The p53 and retinoblastoma (Rb) genes are not required for completion of cell division, but their functions, when disrupted, turn out to be important to the cycle of most cancer cells, perhaps all cancer cells. Two proteins encoded by one genetic locus regulate Rb and p53. The products of that locus, INK4a/ARF, are also powerful tumor suppressors. The products are p16INK4a and p19ARF.

Living with or without cyclins and cyclin-dependent kinases
Article Abstract:
Studies performed over more than a decade have supported the view that cyclin-dependent kinases (Cdks) are important, if not required for entry into, progression through, and exit from the G1 phase of the mammalian cell cycle in response to extracellular mitogenic cues. Recent experiments in which the genes encoding were disrupted in the mouse germ line have revealed that much of fetal development occurs normally in their absence.

Cytokine-dependent imatinib resistance in mouse [BCR-ABL.sup.plus], Arf-null lymphoblastic leukemia
Article Abstract:
The introduction of BCR-ABL kinase in Arf-null severe combined immunodeficient (SCID) bone marrow cells of mice induces lymphoblastic leukemias lacking cytokine receptor that resist imatinib therapy.
